Nashville-based Aerial Development Group announced today it is targeting a fall groundbreaking for its five-story Wedgewood Lofts, a mixed-used building to feature 150 apartments and ground-level retail space and to sit on the South Nashville street from which it derives its name.
The announcement and release of a rendering follows the Metro Council’s unanimous approval last night of a specific plan rezoning of a 1.25-acre site located on the south side of Wedgewood Avenue and less than one block east of Interstate 65. No buildings will need to be razed to make way for the project, which will sit a few blocks south of the epicenter of the fast-changing Wedgewood-Houston district and a few blocks west of the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.
Wedgewood Lofts will be the first large-scale multi-unit residential project Aerial has undertaken. To date, the company has focused on freestanding single-family homes in the city’s various urban neighborhoods.
Wedgewood Lofts will consist of lofts, one- and two-bedroom units ranging in size from 468 square feet to 1,515 square feet. The building, designed by Poole & Poole Architecture, also will offer up to 10,000 square feet of retail space.
“Wedgewood Lofts will help meet the neighborhood’s wishes to activate the area as a walkable neighborhood and transition between commercial and residential along this major corridor,” Britnie Turner (pictured), Aerial founder and CEO, said in the release. “We appreciate the time and input from the planning staff, Councilmember Sandra Moore, South Nashville Action People and other neighbors and look forward to building a structure that complements the community.”
A spring 2017 completion date is targeted.
Relatedly, Aerial is also seeking SP rezoning for 1.9 urban acres for a second project in the Wedgewood-Houston area. Southgate Station will offer a mix of single-family homes, townhomes and flats on Southgate Avenue and Pillow Street near the fairgrounds. (Read more here.)
