Historical Commission Recognizes Aerial Development for Preservation of Workmen’s Circle Hall

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – May 22, 2015 – Nashville’s Metro Historical Commission recognized Aerial Development Group for its preservation of the three-story brick building known as Workmen’s Circle Hall that played a significant role in Nashville’s Jewish history from 1859-1952.

Aerial Development Group was recognized for its preservation work during the 40th Annual Metro Historical Commission Preservation Awards held May 19.

In 2010, the building was designated by Historic Nashville, Inc. as a “Nashville Nine” and one of the most endangered properties in Davidson County.

In 2013, Aerial Development Group purchased the historic Workmen’s Circle Hall property (also known as the Iser-Bloomstein House) at 521 Fifth Avenue South for $700,000. The company spent $500,000 renovating the building and then moved its offices there.

While the goal was to restore the 3-story structure to its natural state, by the time the company purchased the historic property, the building had sustained much damage due to fire and years of abandonment. Much of the interior had to be gutted. Extensive work was done to restore the original exterior brickwork. In keeping with the historic building’s Italianate-style architecture, elements like tall ceilings and high open windows were incorporated into the renovation.

Building material reclaimed from the historic Workmen’s Circle Hall was repurposed as bookshelves, fireplace mantels and kitchen islands in Aerial Development Group’s offices and in homes the company has renovated in East Nashville and 12South.
